FAQs for volunteers

Are the participants allowed into the equipment storage container?

No, kindly remind participants that the volunteers are responsible for all equipment and thank them for offering to help.

Are volunteers allowed into the equipment storage container?

Only the volunteers that are assigned to that specific task are allowed in the equipment storage container.

Do we let participants pick their own paddles and life jackets?

Yes, however you should assist with the paddle and life jacket to ensure proper fit of both.

How do you tell what size paddle someone needs?

The paddle should measure from the ground and up to the top of the ribcage, just below the breasts.

How will I know where I should sit in the boat?

There is a volunteer task sign in sheet, the person responsible for boat seat assignment will tell you where to sit.

The paddlers and volunteers will line up on land prior to loading the boat in sequence.

Is there a list of exercises I should use for warm up/cool down?

Yes, the exercises will be posted on the warm-up and cool down boards.

Will volunteers be assigned to specific individuals or groups of individuals for an entire practice?

No.

What is the best way to help someone into and out of the boat?

We will have boat loading and unloading drills.

Do we unload from the front, back or middle of the boat first?

Always take your direction from the coach or steers on this matter.

If a Special Needs Dragon Boat crew member is not paddling correctly should I correct them?

No, but you may be asked by the coach to demonstrate a proper technique if it is required.

What is the appropriate way to respond if one of the Special Needs Dragon Boat crew does not want to paddle?

If the paddler is impeding others, then remind the paddler of the proper way to sit in the boat when not paddling. Otherwise, continue paddling.

What is the appropriate way to respond if one of the Special Needs Dragon Boat crew is making inappropriate or derogatory comments?

Remind the padder that “We only use positive words in this boat.”

If we notice that a paddler seems to really enjoy themselves and are getting the hang of paddling, are there programs we can suggest?

Please make the coaches aware outside of practice, and they will make a plan with the paddler.

The Learn to Paddle programs offered at SNCC on Saturday mornings are terrific for new paddlers. Both Sprint Canoe/Kayak and Dragon Boat have a Learn to Paddle program. They can register on the website www.SNCC.ca
