South Niagara Canoe ClubHope Floats Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat |
SNCC Hope Floats is a Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat crew No experience necessary, no age limits SNCC Hope Floats' main focuses are to share the benefits of exercise and team participation with Breast Cancer Survivors through Dragon Boat and to support one another while improving/maintaining fitness and developing paddling skills. Hope Floats are breast cancer survivors from the Niagara Region and beyond. We are also members of SNCC’s mixed crew Canal Dragons. Creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness, we train and race with our family and friends and still participate in events with a BCS division. We participate in Breast Cancer Survivor festivals including the International Breast Cancer Paddling Commission (IBCPC) festival that is held once every four years. Hope Floats members participate in Breast Cancer Survivor (BCS) specific events such as fundraising, socials, community outreach and additional practices leading up to BCS festivals. Participation in festivals is not mandatory. Next Hope Floats Meet & Greet @ Wellspring Niagara TBA due to Covid-19 in person meet and greets were cancelled, and we are currently in the process of developing a plan to continue our outreach Why Dragon Boating for Breast Cancer Survivors? Wellness, Fitness, Camaraderie, Fun and Support Post-treatment, breast cancer survivors may experience some limitations to their prior level of physical ability. This can be improved by dragon boat paddling. Attending 1 to 2 practices per week can help to regain strength, improve fitness levels and provide a great support group with those who have taken a similar cancer journey. Dragon boating is an upper body activity that is non-weight bearing, therefore associated with less injury. It is shown to improve range of motion with a carry over into daily life. As well, the risk of lymphedema can be lowered Please Come Workout with Us, online from your own home where physical distancing is natural!
